Our approach
Our Approach: Trauma-Informed, Collaborative Care
Personal Courage is a community of dedicated professionals helping people navigate and recover from the complexities of life.
Everyone Can Move Forward.
We meet you where you are and walk beside you, with skill and care, one step at a time.
What Guides Our Care
-
Safety Comes First
Every member of our team is trauma-informed. We understand that difficult experiences can shape how a person thinks, feels, copes and trusts, and we build that into how we work with you, so you can feel seen, respected and secure.
What trauma-informed care looks like in practice
- We work to understand the impact of trauma while taking care to avoid re-traumatization.
- Your safety comes first, and you are more than what happened to you.
- We focus on your strengths and help you feel empowered in your own care.
-
You're a Partner in Your Care
We start by listening to your story. Then we build a tailored roadmap for your recovery together, so the plan reflects what matters to you. The goal is to help you move beyond surviving, toward thriving.
Approaches built on partnership
Several approaches our therapists use are built on this idea. In person-centered therapy, the client guides their own healing. Narrative therapy helps people separate themselves from their problems and re-author their own stories.
-
Everyone Is Welcome Here
Personal Courage welcomes everyone. We are LGBTQ+ affirming, and we welcome people of every race, ethnicity, culture and faith, or none, every body and ability, and every kind of family. Whoever you are, you will be treated with dignity and respect, as the whole person you are.
What this means in practice
- Who you are is never the problem to be fixed. We work on what you came to work on.
- If a disability or brain injury makes anything harder, like forms, lighting or session length, tell us what would help and we'll work it out with you.
- We do not discriminate. Read our nondiscrimination notice.
-
Evidence-Based Pathways
We offer advanced trauma therapies such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a structured therapy designed to help people process distressing memories. We also offer focused, intensive treatment options, because healing doesn't always fit a weekly schedule.
Other approaches we offer
Depending on what's the best fit, our clinicians also draw on trauma-informed therapy, narrative therapy, person-centered therapy, psychodynamic therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing in their work with adults and with children and teens.

Specialized Care for Trauma and Brain Injury
A traumatic experience or a brain injury can change how you feel, how you think and how you move through the world, sometimes in ways that are hard to explain to the people around you. You don't have to figure it out alone. Our Clinical Director is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and is certified in EMDR, and our team includes clinicians who know brain injury recovery well and bring real care to this work.
Trauma and brain injury care
After a brain injury, many people tell us they don't quite feel like themselves. You might be more irritable or overwhelmed than before, frustrated by a memory that used to be sharp, or grieving the life you had planned. Your family may be feeling it too. We're here to help you understand what's changed, find your footing again and feel more like you.
We also walk alongside people carrying the weight of trauma, including veterans, military families and first responders who have given so much of themselves to others. And because brain injury and trauma so often go hand in hand, we know how to care for both together.
Why We're Called Personal Courage
For many people, starting therapy takes courage. It can mean facing fears and vulnerabilities, and working through emotional pain.
We put that courage at the center of our identity to honor the strength of our clients.
