EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps people process distressing memories. At Personal Courage in Grand Rapids, EMDR is offered by our EMDR-certified Clinical Director and an EMDR-trained therapist.

How EMDR Works

Some experiences stay with us long after they end. EMDR is designed to help the brain process distressing memories, so they can feel less intense and less overwhelming.

It is widely used for trauma and PTSD. You stay in control throughout, and your clinician explains each step before you begin.

  • Getting Ready

Your clinician learns your story and helps you build calming skills before any memory work.

  • Processing a Memory

You focus on one memory at a time while following a back-and-forth rhythm, such as eye movements.

  • Closing Each Session

Each session ends with steps to help you feel settled before you leave.

  • Checking In

The next session starts by reviewing how you've been since the last one.
