Therapy for Adults

Individual therapy at Personal Courage in Grand Rapids is a supportive place to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and to improve your overall well-being. We see adults in person and by telehealth anywhere in Michigan.

How Therapy Can Help

Adults come to therapy for many reasons: anxiety or depression, a painful experience, adjusting to chronic pain, illness or disability, or a change they want to make. You don't need the right words before you start.

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Our clinicians are trained in a range of evidence-based methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing. They'll use their expertise and what they learn about you to choose the approach that fits your needs, your goals and your pace. For trauma, we also offer EMDR, and if you want more focused support than a weekly session allows, we offer intensive options.

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy

Understands the impact of trauma and puts your safety first.

    More about trauma-informed therapy

Understands the impact of trauma, puts safety first, empowers the person, separates the person from their trauma, emphasizes strengths and avoids re-traumatization.

  • Narrative Therapy

Helps you reshape your personal story and see your strengths.

    More about narrative therapy

Helps people reshape their personal stories, separate themselves from their problems, re-author their lives and identify their strengths.

  • Person-Centered Therapy

A supportive, non-judgmental space where you guide your own healing.

    More about person-centered therapy

Developed by psychologist Carl Rogers, this approach is built on empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuineness. Your therapist won't push a set agenda—instead, they'll offer a safe, accepting relationship where you can explore what matters to you and find your own way forward.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy

Explores unconscious patterns and past experiences that shape how we think, feel and act today.

    More about psychodynamic therapy

An insight-focused approach that looks at how early relationships, past experiences and patterns outside our awareness show up in our lives today. Understanding where these patterns come from can give you more freedom in how you respond to people and situations now.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Helps people accept what cannot be changed and commit to action that fits their values.

    More about ACT

Instead of fighting difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT helps you make room for them without getting stuck. From there, you and your therapist figure out what matters most to you and take small, concrete steps toward the life you want.

  • Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Builds present-moment focus to help reduce stress.

    More about mindfulness-based therapy

Uses practices like focused breathing, body awareness and guided attention to help you notice thoughts and feelings as they come, without judging them. Over time, this can ease stress, anxiety and low mood, and make it easier to respond to life instead of react to it.
